Make a Fabric Sunflower for Ukraine
Show your support for Ukraine by joining textile practitioner Holly Carr in making wearable fabric sunflowers, the country's national flower and a symbol of peace.
Time & Location
07 May 2022, 13:00 – 14:30
Byram Arcade, Byram St, Huddersfield HD1, UK
About the Event
In this fundraiser workshop, Holly will show you some basic hand-sewing techniques needed to make a fabric sunflower to wear or display to show your solidarity with Ukraine.
Using a combination of felt pieces, yellow fabrics and upcycled textiles, you will learn how to cut, fold and stitch petals together with a simple running stitch to create your flower. It can be topped off with a button centre or some embroidered french knots to give the appearance of seeds. The sunflower can be made into either a wearable piece by finishing off with a hand-stitched brooch back or a hanging decoration with the addition of a ribbon loop.
This is a fundraiser session, produced as part of the To Ukraine with Love project. We've decided to make this a 'pay as you feel' activity, to be as accessible for everyone as possible. Proceeds will be donated directly to the AUGB (Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain), who have humanitarian aid on the ground in Ukraine.
Skill level - Complete Beginner Sewer, no previous experience necessary
Materials - All materials will be provided (£2 from each ticket sale will cover material costs). You are also welcome to bring your own fabric to work with, or old clothing you'd like to repurpose.
Healthy & Safety: during the workshop everyone will have their own materials and tools. Sanitiser and disinfectant will be available. If you feel unwell prior to the workshop, please let me know in advance and stay at home.
